“Qualitative research in the era of "fast" scholarship”

Abstract

In this seminar, Penny Dick will discuss how pressures for publication, the focus on where you publish rather than what you publish, and the demands of the neoliberal system in which Universities across the world are enmeshed are accelerating problems in the domain of academic publishing. These include the production of safe scholarship; of papers whose value is questionable beyond enhancing a knowledge status quo that is tipped in favour of particular "knowledge brands" (Mehrpouya & Willmott, 2018) and the escalation of questionable and unhelpful reviewer and editorial practices. Some ideas about how the mentalities responsible for these issues might be disrupted will also be presented.
