Medical Education at 190

190th Anniversary of the Belfast Medical School
The exact date is uncertain — but what we do know is fascinating. From 1832, a handful of ambitious students gathered at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution (“Inst”) for anatomy lessons, while gaining clinical experience at the Fever Hospital. By 1836, the anatomy class was “in a most flourishing state,” and that same year, the four-year General Medical Certificate was officially approved by the Apothecaries Company of Ireland. So, 1836 seems a fitting year to mark the birth of Belfast Medical School, making this year its 190th anniversary.
In 190 years, Belfast Medical School has led innovations that changed lives—from the portable defibrillator to titanium plates for trauma care. These and other remarkable objects will help us share our story. Our Journey began with just 15 students a year, welcomed women into medical education in the late 19th century, and now sees 300 future doctors starting their course annually.
