Exploring the "Wonderful World of Pharmacy" at NISF2025

The School of Pharmacy welcomed members of the public to an evening of discovery as part of the 2025 Northern Ireland Science Festival, delivering interactive workshops, hands-on experiments, and insights into pharmacy and pharmaceutical development.

Professor Sharon Haughey addressing an audience

The event, entitled "The Wonderful World of Pharmacy: Living Longer, Better Lives with Medicines", allowed attendees to find out more about how pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists play crucial roles in a wide range of aspects related to medicines and their use in the improvement of patient care.

Participants had the opportunity to step into a simulated pharmacy environment, experience how diseases affect the body, and learn about the latest innovations in drug development and delivery systems focused on the treatment of infections, cancers, and many chronic conditions. They also explored how pharmacists play a crucial role in optimising medicine use across a range of therapeutic areas.

Professor Gavin Andrews, Head of the School of Pharmacy at Â鶹Íø, commented on the event, saying:

“It was wonderful to see so many people come along to join us in celebrating "The Wonderful World of Pharmacy" as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival this year. The School of Pharmacy is actively committed to engaging with the public to promote awareness and to build trust amongst our local community. Tonight’s event showcased the crucial roles of pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and pharmaceutical biotechnologists in healthcare innovation, and it will no doubt have helped to inspire our next generation of STEAM talent.

I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Professor Sharon Haughey and Dr Vicky Kett who organised this magnificent event, and to thank all of our staff and students who helped deliver a hugely successful evening of scientific discovery.”
