School of Pharmacy Welcomes Future Scientists to Pharma and Biotech Careers Event

13 April, 2025

The School of Pharmacy welcomed prospective students and their families to the Whitla Hall for the "Future Medicines: Pharma and Biotech Careers" event, an evening dedicated to exploring the opportunities available within the pharma sector.

School of Pharmacy Students and visitors at the 2026 Future Medicines: Pharma and Biotech Careers event.

Aimed at students from Year 11 to Year 13, the event offered attendees a comprehensive introduction to life at the School of Pharmacy, from degree structures and career pathways to the world-leading research that underpins teaching across the School's programmes in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Visitors had the chance to hear from academic staff, meet current students, and network with representatives from leading pharmaceutical companies, including Almac, Eakin Healthcare and ARC regulatory.

The evening included an overview of the pharmaceutical sector and the career opportunities available to graduates, delivered by Professor David Jones, Director of Education for the School’s BSc programmes, and was followed by a research spotlight delivered by Professor Brendan Gilmore, Deputy Head of the School, which provided attendees with an insight into the School’s research activities and their real-world impact in pharmaceutical development.

A student panel gave visitors a first-hand perspective on study at the School, while a range of information stands allowed attendees to explore topics from career opportunities to the state-of-the-art digital education technologies utilised across programmes within the School of Pharmacy. Staff from the Faculty of Medicine, Health, and Life Sciences, including the Admissions and Access service, were also on hand to answer questions.

Speaking about the event, Professor David Jones, Director of Education for the School’s BSc programmes in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, said:

“Events like this are so important in helping young people understand the breadth of career opportunities available in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors. Our programmes are designed to equip students with the future-ready skills they need to make a real impact, and it was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic young people engaging with our staff, students, and industry partners on the evening.”

Dr Emma McErlean, the School’s Lead for Outreach and Recruitment, and organiser of the event, added:

“We were delighted with the turnout and the energy in the room on the evening. It’s clear that there is a real appetite among young people to learn more about careers in pharma and biotech, and we’re proud to be able to showcase what makes studying at the School of Pharmacy at Queen’s such a unique and rewarding experience. We look forward to welcoming many of these visitors as students in the years to come.”
