Language policy and Brexit
Prof. Daithà Mac SÃthigh's research on language policy was discussed on BBC Radio Ulster's Irish-language programme on 2 October 2019.
Prof. Mac SÃthigh, along with Prof. MÃcheál Ó MainnÃn of the School of Arts, English and Languages, were interviewed about work presented at the recent 'UK Language Policy After Brexit' workshop. Drawing from his on language legislation across the UK and on the, Daithà emphasised the UK's continuing obligations under international law to fulfill its commitments in respect of Gaelic, Welsh, and Irish, and argued for greater use to be made of comparative research on minority languages within and outwith the UK and Ireland in addressing questions such as the status of the Irish language in Northern Ireland.
