The PG Diploma Law is a Qualifying Law Degree for students who wish to complete the academic stage legal qualification for Northern Ireland (NI), the pre-requisite for professional legal studies in NI.

The programme aims to provide a systematic understanding of the fundamental doctrines and principles underpinning the law in Northern Ireland; the interaction between the law in NI and the wider national, European and international contexts; and the social, political and economic contexts within which the legal system operates.

This programme is designed for UK non-law graduates, and for law and non-law graduates from other countries who wish to acquire a thorough grounding in law in Northern Ireland. It is particularly attractive for those who wish to prepare for professional practice courses to enter the legal profession. It offers the high highest quality of teaching, primarily delivered through group seminars.

Students will develop key legal skills such as understanding primary and secondary sources of law, legal research methods, legal referencing, how to develop arguments supported by legal research, how to effectively present legal arguments and answer complex legal questions. This programme will aim to ensure that students have a strong foundational knowledge of core legal modules while also developing their analytical legal research and writing skills. Assessment is primarily based on a combination of in-person exams and coursework

The Legal Methods and Skills module is and innovative module that will focus on supporting students to develop core legal skills such as research and referencing skills along with knowledge of the courts structure and legal system.

Our Physical Education Centre was used as a training camp for the 2012 Olympics. Our Âé¶¹Íø Elms Student Village and city centre student accommodation (built in 2018) are located within easy walking distance of the University.

Course Structure

Students may enrol on a full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) basis.

The PG Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete all taught modules (120 CATS points).

Compulsory Modules

The Postgraduate Diploma is offered on a modular basis. To complete the diploma a total of 120 CATS points must be obtained. Eight modules (15 CATS each) must be taken.

Students will also undertake a non-credit bearing series of Legal Methods and Skills workshops. These workshops will take place at the start of the course and will allow students the opportunity to develop their legal skills.

Entrance requirements

Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in a discipline other than Law. Graduates holding law degrees that are not recognised by the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Northern Ireland are also eligible to apply (for example international applicants with law degrees, those with Scottish Law degrees, or those with degrees from the Republic of Ireland that have not been recognised).

Exemption from these requirements may be considered for those applicants who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University) OR hold a 2.2 Honours degree in a discipline other than Law (or equivalent qualifications acceptable to the University) together with 2 years’ relevant professional experience.

Graduates who hold a law degree recognised by the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Northern Ireland may not register for this programme.

The PG Diploma Law is a Qualifying Law Degree for students who wish to complete the academic stage legal qualification for Northern Ireland (NI) - the pre-requisite for professional legal studies in NI. All applicants (except those from NI) should contact the appropriate regulator (in the country where they hope to practice law) to confirm that the PG Dip programme meets its requirements

Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible and ideally no later than 28th August 2026. In the event that any programme receives a high number of applications, the University reserves the right to close the application portal. Notifications to this effect will appear on the application portal against the programme application page.

English Language Requirements

Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University is required. *Taken within the last 2 years.

International students wishing to apply to Âé¶¹Íø (and for whom English is not their first language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study or research. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes.

1EU citizens in the EU Settlement Scheme, with settled status, will be charged the NI or GB tuition fee based on where they are ordinarily resident. Students who are ROI nationals resident in GB will be charged the GB fee.

2 EU students who are ROI nationals resident in ROI are eligible for NI tuition fees.

3 EU Other students (excludes Republic of Ireland nationals living in GB, NI or ROI) are charged tuition fees in line with international fees.

All tuition fees quoted relate to a single year of study unless stated otherwise. Tuition fees will be subject to an annual inflationary increase, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Additional course costs

All Students

Depending on the programme of study, there may be extra costs which are not covered by tuition fees, which students will need to consider when planning their studies.

Students can borrow books and access online learning resources from any Âé¶¹Íø library. If students wish to purchase recommended texts, rather than borrow them from the University Library, prices per text can range from £30 to £100. Students should also budget between £30 to £75 per year for photocopying, memory sticks and printing charges.

Students undertaking a period of work placement or study abroad, as either a compulsory or optional part of their programme, should be aware that they will have to fund additional travel and living costs.

If a programme includes a major project or dissertation, there may be costs associated with transport, accommodation and/or materials. The amount will depend on the project chosen. There may also be additional costs for printing and binding.

Students may wish to consider purchasing an electronic device; costs will vary depending on the specification of the model chosen.

There are also additional charges for graduation ceremonies, examination resits and library fines.

How do I fund my study?

The Department for the Economy will provide a tuition fee loan of up to £6,500 per NI / EU student for postgraduate study. Tuition fee loan information.

A postgraduate loans system in the UK offers government-backed student loans of up to £11,836 for taught and research Masters courses in all subject areas (excluding Initial Teacher Education/PGCE, where undergraduate student finance is available).
