Stand Alone Module | Nursing

Cytotoxic and Biological Therapies in the Non-Oncology Setting

LEVEL OF STUDY : 7 postgraduate level

This module is intended for registered nurses currently employed in clinical areas where cytotoxic and biological therapies are administered or prescribed outside of oncology settings, including (but not limited to) urology, dermatology, immunology, rheumatology, and gastroenterology.

It is also appropriate for nurses who provide care for patients receiving cytotoxic or biological therapies while outlying from their specialist area, such as those working on general wards or in community settings. 

As the module includes a practice-based portfolio component, participants must be working in an environment where these therapies are administered to enable completion of the required clinical competencies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a professional qualification in Nursing, Midwifery, or Allied Health and Social Care Services. Note: some modules require a specific professional qualification. See Selection Criteria for full requirements.

The Programme

  • Course Content

    To develop practitioners who can critically evaluate, autonomously implement, and lead evidence-based practice in the administration of cytotoxic and biological therapies within non-oncology settings, demonstrating systematic understanding of immunological principles, originality in addressing complex patient care challenges, and professional accountability in therapeutic decision-making. 

    Content includes: 

    • Immunology and pathophysiology of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.  
    • Pharmacology and mechanisms of action of cytotoxic and biological therapies  
    • Safe handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous drugs  
    • Patient assessment, monitoring, and evidence-based management of complications  
    • Therapeutic communication, patient education, concordance optimisation, and chronic illness implications  
    • Professional, legal, and ethical frameworks with service user perspectives 
  • Outcomes

    This stand alone module is worth 20 CATs points. Where a clinical skills component is included, there may be a requirement for support and supervision of an experienced practitioner within the student’s clinical area.  

  • Delivery

    Students should note that delivery may be via blended learning, with a mix of online and face to face classes as detailed within the module timetable on Canvas.

    Spring (SPR) teaching commences w/c Monday, 18 January 2027 (Week 18) and finishes w/c Monday, 27 April 2027 unless otherwise advised. 

    Venue for first class listed below - thereafter, students should check the Weekly Planner facility on QSIS for remaining venues.

  • Selection Criteria

    Applicants must have a professional qualification in Nursing, Midwifery, or Allied Health and Social Care Services. They shall normally hold a relevant 2.2 Honours degree or above, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.  

    Applicants who do not hold a 2.2 Honours degree (or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University) may be considered on a case-by-case basis where they can demonstrate evidence of successful study at Level 6 in a healthcare related subject.  

    Applicants must provide evidence of at least 20 CAT points at Level 3/6. Certificates must clearly state level of study and credit worthiness to meet the entry requirements.  

    In addition, applicants accessing post graduate certificates or standalone modules must be working the relevant clinical area.  

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:
