Dr Gary Mitchell

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Dr Gary Mitchell MBE is a Reader (Education) in the School of Nursing & Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast and Director for Postgraduate Taught Education. His work centres on improving nursing practice through evidence-based education and knowledge translation, with a strong focus on older adult care and digital learning. He leads and contributes to multiple funded projects.

Research Interests:

  • Nursing education and pedagogy (including digital, artificial intelligence (AI) gamified and asynchronous approaches). 
  • Care of older people across non-hospital settings (care homes, community, hospice).
  • Dementia, Delirium, Parkinson's Disease, Cancer and Palliative Care in long-term care
  • Planetary Health, Decarbonisation in Healthcare Education or Practice. 
  • Mixed-methods/qualitative research (ethnography, grounded theory, evidence synthesis). 
  • Digital interventions and serious games for professional/ public health education (e.g., delirium, pancreatic cancer awareness).

Supervises (or has supervised) 20+ PhD students and welcomes enquiries across;

Healthcare education,

Digital learning,

Community/older adult care, and

Qualitative/mixed-methods topics.

Predominantly supervises students on a 'with publications' pathway.
