MHLS Celebrates Gold

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences has achieved an all Gold Swan status, becoming the first Faculty of its kind to receive this prestigious recognition.

Colleagues from across MHLS celebrate being the first Faculty to achieve Gold Athena Swan status across each School

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences was pleased to participate in Queen’s celebration marking 25 years of the Queen’s Gender Initiative, held in the Great Hall. The event brought together representatives from 15 Schools across the University that have recently received Athena Swan Awards, recognising their shared commitment to advancing gender equality.

All 15 Schools at Queen’s now hold Athena Swan Awards, including seven Gold, four Silver and four Bronze. In particular, the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences has achieved an all Gold status, becoming the first Faculty of its kind to receive this prestigious recognition.

As recipients of a Gold Athena Swan Award, our four schools are acknowledged for their sustained and impactful approach to embedding equality, diversity and inclusion across teaching, research and professional practice. The Athena Swan Charter is a rigorous, peer reviewed external framework that recognises excellence in promoting gender equality.

Queen’s also holds an institutional Gold Athena Swan Award, achieved in 2024, making it the first university on the island of Ireland and one of only three in the United Kingdom to attain this distinction. Together, these achievements reflect the continued dedication of colleagues across the University and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences to fostering an inclusive, equitable and supportive environment for all.
